Welcome to Carpe Diem, the website of Mícheál de Barra. You can read some more about me and my work on the About page. "Carpe Diem" comes from a quote from Horace, (yes, he of the Odes fame) who lived in Rome in the 1st. Century BC. The full quote is:

Dum loquimur, fugerit invida Aetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero (Horace Odes, Book 1)
Which could be translated as
While we're talking, envious time is fleeing: pluck the day, put no trust in the future

Mostly today, we translate carpe diem as "seize the day" (Remember Robin Williams quotes this as teacher John Keating in the film Dead Poets Society).

This site is about the journey or pilgrimage that we are all undertaking as we live our lives. It is about the threshold experiences we have occasionally when we let our guard down or we are confronted by something or somebody we are not expecting. It is about our spiritual journeys however we conceive them to be.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
(Mark Twain)

"While our culture is all gloss and pace on the outside, within it is too often haunted and lost. The commercial edge of so-called 'progress' has cut away a huge region of human tissue and webbing that held us in communion with each other. We have fallen out of belonging. Consequently, when we stand before crucial thresholds in our lives, we have no rituals to protect, encourage and guide us as we cross over into the unknown. For such crossings, we need to find new words"
John O'Donoghue, Benedictus
